Outsiders Art & Collectibles is Durham’s only gallery focusing on the genre of Southern Outsider Art.
Outsider Art is often identified as the creative work of artists who are self-taught and not formally trained. Often these artists have little or no contact with the mainstream art world or art institutions. The movement has been gaining popularity since the term “Outsider Art” was first coined in 1972 and has steadily moved to the forefront as a recognized and celebrated art form sought out by collectors.
I was lucky to catch an Outsiders Art & Collectibles opening on my last visit to Durham (I live in SF now) – felt like I found the coolest little secret in town. The lady who runs the gallery is great & obviously passionate about outsider art. Recommend a stop-by for people new to the “outsider art” world – I bought a few R.A. Love pieces that continue to bring joy to my home.
The Gallery also provides art for selected restaurants with works currently on display at Rue Cler, Fullsteam Brewery, and Parker and Otis in Durham, NC.

Outsider’s owner, Pamela Gutlon, strongly believes that bringing Durham’s business, non-profit, and art communities together better serves the community as a whole. The Gallery is an active supporter of Book Harvest, a new Triangle initiative to collect gently used books for children and young adult and to place them into the hands and homes of children who need them. Time and again, studies demonstrate the tremendous power of books on the lives of children. The data show, for example, that the single biggest predictor of academic success is not race, income, or geographic location; it is the presence of books in the home. Yet many children in the Triangle lack books. Help us give them books by bringing your gently used childrens’ and young adult books to Outsiders! The donated books will be given to children through local organizations, including Durham’s own Read Seed and the Rogers-Eubanks Neighborhood Association.
