Book Drive for Book Harvest
Please join us for an exhibition and reception with artist Bruce New on Saturday, January 29 from 5:30 to 8:00 pm at Outsiders Gallery at 718 Iredell Street in Durham. Outsiders is also delighted to continue the book drive for Book Harvest, a new initiative to collect gently used books for children and young adults. This event is free and open to the public.
About Bruce New:
“My work is an attempt to document my existence – to leave a visual record of my thoughts, ideas, and fantasies. I reside in the wilds of Kentucky, with a bird and our son, on a mountaintop, right next to the sun, where I create my artwork high on butterfly wine.”
Bruce New has lived in Kentucky his entire life and has always made art. As a child he created notebooks of comic heroes and battle scenes of war but never thought he could be an artist and instead dreamed of being Reggie Jackson. Bruce uses pen on paper, usually from old books, and does the drawings in parts, cutting them up and then using collage to make them into new different compositions. He has a compulsive “need” to make these things and the work basically makes itself; he just tries to not get in the way.
About Outsiders Art & Collectibles:
Outsiders Art & Collectibles is Durham’s only gallery focusing on the genre of Southern Outsider Art. Outsider’s owner, Pamela Gutlon, strongly believes that bringing Durham’s business, non-profit, and art communities together better serves the community as a whole. For more information about this event, contact Pamela Gutlon at pgutlon@outsiders-art.com, or call 919-451-3231
About Book Harvest:
Book Harvest is a new Triangle initiative to collect gently used books for children and young adults and to place them into the hands and homes of children who need them. Time and again, studies demonstrate the tremendous power of books on the lives of children. Please bring your gently used books to Outsiders and the donated books will be given to children through local organizations, including Durham’s own Read Seed and the Rogers-Eubanks Neighborhood Association.
